Frequently Asked Questions

What is the time commitment?
Counsellors need to be available for approximately two to three hours a week. Support volunteers about two hours a week or fortnight. There will be occasional evening meetings for support and ongoing learning. We ask all our volunteers to give a few hours a year to local fundraising events

When do I need to be available?
Our main requirement is for volunteers who can be available during the day. There is some demand for evening counselling.

How long do you expect me to volunteer for?
There is no minimum requirement as we realise that your circumstances can change. To really learn and gain from your volunteering it is best if you can volunteer for at least two years.

Will I be expected to do anything apart from counsel or support clients?
All our volunteers are expected to assist a few times a year with local fundraising activities. All client contact volunteers must attend evening meetings held approximately once every two months.

What training will I receive?
There will be an initial in-house training course. Ongoing learning takes place at our evening meetings. All volunteer training is in-house.

Can I use my volunteering for my counselling course?
This will be subject to certain conditions and will require discussion.

Will you pay my counselling supervision costs?
In certain circumstances we will pay towards supervision costs. This will be discussed with you.

Can I change from being a support volunteer to a counselling volunteer?
As you progress through your counselling training that is a possibility. As a support volunteer the skills and knowledge acquired will be very useful as a volunteer counsellor.

I have never been on a counselling course. Is there anything else that I can do to help?
We need volunteers to help us fundraise. This role would mainly involve participating in local fundraising events. If you have the time you can organise events. The time commitment is flexible depending on your other commitments.
